Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has expressed frustration over the stalled reconstruction of the Lagos-Sango-Abeokuta Expressway due to bureaucratic bottlenecks, causing significant hardship for road users.

The governor disclosed this on Wednesday during an inspection of the 20km Agbara-Lusada-Atan Dual Carriage Way reconstruction in the Ado-Odo-Ota Local Government Area, assuring that this road project would be completed by September.

Abiodun spoke on the economic importance of the roads to Ogun State and Nigeria. He recalled the collaborative efforts by Ogun and Lagos state governments to take over and reconstruct the Expressway, which faced delays from the Federal Government since the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The governor said, “The Lagos-Sango-Abeokuta road is a Federal Government road and has been in a very bad shape for long. Because of the suffering our people pass through on the road, I and my counterpart in Lagos jointly wrote a letter, using a single letterhead, to the Federal Executive Council, seeking the transfer of that road for us to reconstruct.”

He stated that despite waiting for over a month without a response and sending a reminder, the road was not handed over until President Bola Tinubu took office.

However, Abiodun noted that the state still faces resistance from some federal officials regarding the transfer, which compelled the state government to formally award the reconstruction contract in May, even without the necessary transfer documents.

“After waiting for a month without reply, we wrote a reminder. That road was not handed over to us until the present federal government came on board. The contract for the road has since been awarded since May this year,” Abiodun explained.

The governor emphasised the continuous efforts to overcome these challenges to ensure the timely completion and improvement of the critical infrastructure for the benefit of the people and the economy.
