The evacuation of 5,500 Nigerians in Sudan by the federal government begins today, Wednesday as the sum of N150 million has been disbursed to that effect.
The fund is meant for the hiring of 40 buses to convey stranded citizens from Sudan to Cairo in Egypt.
Reports reveal that the money was paid to an undisclosed transport company on Tuesday at 12:37 pm by the Central Bank of Nigeria through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
The payment was confirmed on Tuesday by the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, who disclosed that the evacuees would take off on Wednesday morning.
The conflict in Sudan has so far claimed no less than 500 lives with thousands of others injured and millions displaced.
In a previous message to Nigerians in the war-torn country, the federal government called for calm while advising them to maintain communication.
It was also reported that the students were denied entry into Ethiopia while fleeing from the escalating crisis.
The fighting is between former allies, General Abdel al-Burha, the leader of the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF paramilitary group, General Mohamed Dagalo.
The evacuation of Nigerians by the federal government was scheduled for Tuesday but had to be shifted to Wednesday for security reasons.
