OAU medical student collapse death tragedy occurred moments before the Part IV student was due to begin his clinical viva examination, according to accounts gathered from students and official statements.

Despite swift efforts by medical personnel and lecturers present at the scene, Emmanuel was confirmed dead hours after he was rushed for treatment, deepening grief across the campus.

In a statement issued by the Great Ife Students’ Union on Thursday, the union described the incident as a “devastating loss”, noting that the unexpected death had shaken the institution to its core.

The union extended condolences to the bereaved family and colleagues, particularly the Medical Students’ Association, describing the loss as an “unbelievably heavy burden” for fellow students already under intense academic pressure.

The statement also drew attention to the growing concern over the physical and psychological strain faced by medical students, urging a renewed focus on student welfare alongside academic demands.

Similarly, the Ife University Medical Students’ Association confirmed the death in its own tribute, describing Emmanuel as a promising student, colleague and friend with a bright future in medicine.

The association expressed sorrow over what it called a “painfully devastating” loss and called for privacy for the grieving family while honouring his memory.

However, the incident has also sparked public debate online, with some commentators questioning the adequacy of emergency response measures available during the incident.

Allegations circulating on social media claimed that the ambulance deployed lacked essential life-support equipment, though these claims have not been officially verified by authorities.

In response, the university management confirmed that it has commenced engagements with relevant stakeholders, including the bereaved family, to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.

University spokesperson Abiodun Olarewaju stated that Emmanuel reportedly complained of chest pain during the examination before he was immediately attended to by lecturers and colleagues present.

Despite all efforts to revive him, he was pronounced dead, prompting the institution to express profound condolences to his family and the wider medical faculty.

The tragedy comes just months after another medical student from the same institution reportedly died in similar circumstances, intensifying concerns within the academic community over student welfare and emergency preparedness.
