Firefighters are battling a blaze at a Lagos fuel terminal in Apapa as emergency crews work to contain the explosion and prevent further damage
Emergency responders from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service on Friday, 3 July 2026, were deployed to the Coconut area of Apapa, Lagos, Nigeria, following a powerful explosion and fire outbreak at the Bono Energy Terminal along the Apapa–Oworonshoki Expressway.

Shakiru Amodu, spokesperson for the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, confirmed the incident in a brief statement to journalists, noting that firefighting operations were already underway at the scene as crews battled to bring the situation under control.
“The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service is currently curbing a fire explosion at Bono Energy Terminal on Apapa-Oworonshoki Expressway, by Coconut, Olodi Apapa, Lagos. Update to follow,” Amodu said.
The fire, which erupted at the fuel storage facility, sent thick plumes of smoke into the air, raising immediate concern among residents and workers in the densely populated industrial corridor of Apapa, a key hub for Nigeria’s oil and logistics activities.
Although the cause of the explosion has not yet been determined, emergency officials confirmed that investigations will follow once the fire is fully contained. No official casualty figures had been released at the time of reporting, as responders continued operations at the site.
