It appears Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher are in agreement on this year’s winner of the Ballon d’Or, though Carragher thinks someone else should get the award.

The Ballon d’Or winner will be announced next week, although it has already had to be denied the winner has been told in advance. It will be the first time the award has been handed out since it was cancelled due to Covid last year despite all club football being completed.

The decision prevented Robert Lewandowski from taking home the trophy, but Bayern Munich is now in line for another trophy after breaking Gerd Muller’s 49-year Bundesliga scoring record.

The Liverpool striker believes that the Polish striker should win the award but, like Henry, Lionel Messi’s Copa America triumph with Argentina will seal the seventh award for the PSG forward.

“Leo Messi will, I think [win it] because of finally winning the Copa America with Argentina,” Henry said on CBS during their Champions League coverage.

“I think Lewandowski will win it, I think he deserves to win it,” Carragher initially said, before accepting that Messi’s first international trophy will play a part.

“I would pick Lewandowski, but I think Messi may just do it because people will feel he’s finally done something for Argentina.”

In 2021, Messi scored more than 30 times for Barca and PSG, and nobody else scored more goals than him at Copa America, with Argentina winning the championship. He didn’t win any silverware with Barcelona last season when he was playing for the club.

Despite scoring more goals than anyone else in a Bundesliga season, Bayern Munich failed to defend their Champions League title, losing to Paris Saint-Germain in the quarterfinals, when Lewandowski was out injured and did not participate in the Euros.

Also mentioned among potential Ballon d’Or contenders this year is Benzema, as is Chelsea midfielder Jorginho, who won both the Champions League and Euro 2020 with club and country.

Benzema’s dream of a Ballon d’Or could be shattered as a direct casualty of the guilty verdict as it might cost him a title that he has longed to win.
