Popular investigative journalist, Fisayo Soyombo is currently detained at the Force Headquarters, Abuja under the instructions of the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba.

This information came to light when the investigative journalist, tweeted that he was honouring an invitation from the police. Since he sent the message on popular microblogging platform, Twitter, Soyombo has since not been heard from.

According to reports, Soyombo’s detention is in connection with an investigative story published on Foundation for Investigative Journalism’s website, in August 2021 alleging that a Deputy Inspector General of Police, Joseph Egbunike, joined other police chiefs to approve more than N1bn for some police transit camp projects in Benue, Bauchi, Plateau, Katsina and Kano states.

A statement released by FIJ reads: “FIJ understands that a group of lawyers petitioned Usman Alkali, the Inspector General of Police, over the story, asking for the “prosecution” of those behind it for defamation under the Penal Code.

The lawyers are led by one Stefan Onome Okorodudu and they claim to operate under a joint mandate as “Concerned Lawyers in defence of the Nigeria Police and its officers from the peddling and publication of falsehood”.

As of the time of this report, Fisayo is yet to respond to messages as to his safety or exit from the Police headquarters.
