#EndSARS Memorial: Police officers fire teargas at protesters

In remembrance of the heroes who lost their lives at the Lekki tollgate on October 20, 2020, protesters have gathered in their numbers to speak against injustice and the unlawful detention of the people that were arrested during the protest last year.

Reports just reaching us is that officers of the Nigerian Police Force have started firing teargas at unarmed protesters at the Lekki tollgate.

However, the Lagos State Police chief, CP Hakeem Odumosu while engaging pressmen, said that miscreants had taken over the protests, and that was why he ordered his men to fire teargas canisters at the #EndSARS protesters today.

Odumosu in his words said, ” I called Tope who is representing the youths at the judicial panel and he told me that the commemoration protest is over. I also called Femi Falana and he told me the protest will now be indoor”.

He went further to say that since the commemoration protest is scheduled to end by 10 am, it made no sense that people were still loitering around the Lekki tollgate.

“This is not a protest venue, we have the Gani Fawehinmi park for protests,” he says.

Odumosu added that he would not allow a comeback of what happened last year, referencing hoodlums hijacking the peaceful protests and destroying public facilities and properties of people.

“We cannot ground the economy of Lagos because of a memorial. Today is a working day”, Odumosu laments.

Meanwhile, a handful of journalists and protesters have been beaten to a pulp and arrested.

Earlier, LagosPost reported that scores of persons have been arrested by law enforcement agents.
