Alonso, who spent five seasons as a Liverpool player between 2004 and 2009, became Chelsea’s permanent manager in May 2026 after the club moved to appoint him as their next long-term leader.
The Xabi Alonso Chelsea Choice came into focus after Liverpool parted ways with Arne Slot two weeks after Chelsea confirmed Alonso’s appointment, eventually naming Andoni Iraola as their new manager.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Alonso explained that the circumstances surrounding both opportunities played a key role in determining his next career move.
“Well, it is about timings,” Alonso said.
“I am here today on my first day at Stamford Bridge, talking to you. I am looking forward to this challenge, a big challenge, and Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs and I am looking forward to having success here.”
The appointment marked a new chapter for Alonso, who returned to the Premier League in a managerial capacity after building his reputation through successful coaching spells.
The former Spain international previously enjoyed a decorated playing career, representing some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
His arrival at Chelsea has generated significant attention because of his strong connection with Liverpool, where he won the UEFA Champions League during the 2004-05 season under manager Rafael Benitez.
Despite his history at Anfield, Alonso said his focus is now on delivering success at Stamford Bridge and leading Chelsea into a new era.
The Blues will hope Alonso’s tactical approach and experience at the highest level can help the club compete for major honours in domestic and European competitions.

For Liverpool, the decision to appoint Iraola means the club has taken a different direction following Slot’s departure, while Alonso begins preparations for his first full season as Chelsea manager.
