World Cup 2022: Nigeria, Cameroon, Tunisia, Algeria join six others to qualify for play-off round

Nigeria, Cameroon, Tunisia and Algeria are the latest countries in Africa to qualify into the play-off round of the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

On Tuesday, both the Nigerian and Algerian teams had a draw from their matches while Cameroon dashed Ivory Coast’s hope of topping Group D in a 1-0 win, thereby completing the African teams to advance to the play-off – eight

The Super Eagles’s 1-1 draw against the Blue Sharks at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos placed them top of Group C with 13 points.

Napoli forward, Victor Osimhen, scored the only goal for Nigeria against Cape Verde.

The Desert Warriors’s 2-2 draw with the Stallion, placed the African champions top in Group A with 14 points.

Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez and Galatasaray’s Sofiane Feghouli scored two goals for Algeria against Burkina Faso securing their play-off space.

At the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium, Douala, the Indomitable Lions trashed the hopes of the Elephants in a 1-0 win placing them top in Group D with 15 points.

Olympique Lyonnais striker Karl Toko Ekambi’s first-half goal sealed Cameroon as the final team from Africa to advance to the play-offs round of the 2022 World Cup qualifier.

Meanwhile, at the Stade Olympique de Rades, Tunisia, the Eagles of Carthage cruised into the play-off round with a 3-1 win over the Chipolopolo placing them top of Group B with 13 points over Equatorial Guinea who needed a win but got an away draw with Mauritania.

The three goals were scored by Aissa Bilal Laidouni in the 18 minutes, Nottingham Forest defender, Mohamed Drager in the 31st minute and Al Ahly’s Ali Maaloul scored the third at 43 minutes

These four countries join six other African countries that are already through to the next round. The 10 group winners of the second round will feature in one of the five two-legged matches.

Five winners from the third-round matches will progress to the World Cup next year.

The other six are; Senegal, Morocco, Egypt, Ghana, Mali, and the Democratic Republic of Congo
