Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez has explained why his team lost 1-0 in their Champions League clash with Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday.

A goal in the first half by Danylo Sikan secured the win for Shakhtar Donetsk over Barcelona at Volksparkstadion.

Throughout the game, Xavi’s side managed only one shot on target while Shakhtar Donetsk had four.

Reacting after the game, Xavi said that Barcelona did not play a good game against the host.

The Spaniard told the media (h/t BarcaBlaugranes), “We have not played a good game. Nothing has gone as planned.

“We wanted to confirm the classification but it is a clear step backwards. The Champions League demands the highest level but we have not found it. We are angry.

“We could not fail and we have failed. It’s a big mistake on our part.”

Also speaking to the press after the game, Joao Cancelo, said “The sporting sensations are not good. We have been playing very poorly for two games,” Cancelo said (h/t SPORT).

“We are left with the bad feeling of losing a match that would have served to advance to the next round of the Champions League. Against Real Sociedad, we did not deserve the victory and today we did not play a good game to get the three points,” Cancelo added.

“Now we have a game on Saturday to continue growing,” the Portuguese said. “After the break, we will have to return with a different mentality.”

Robert Lewandowski however added that Barcelona must improve while also offering his analysis of the game after the defeat, adding (h/t SPORT),

“Today they played with great regularity, they scored a goal, they had another in the first half. We are missing the last pass, but also the path to these situations.”

“We have something to work on and we hope that on Sunday, in the next game, we will improve our game, especially in attack. It is a difficult moment for us, but I hope we will overcome it soon. It has been hard, but I hope we will get back to normality quickly,” he said.

Barcelona still top Group H with nine points from four matches in the UCL.
