He said his primary mandate would be achieved through close collaboration with partners including the Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON), the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Agency (NERC) and the Federal Ministry of Energy.

“We carry them out through a series of activities, one of which is the inspection and testing of all categories of electrical equipment and installations.

“When we go out to inspect, we make sure that all the requirements are met before we can issue a certification for that equipment to be installed for use in the country.

“Through that process, we enforce the rules and regulations. We also do regular monitoring of existing networks,” he said.

The statement explained that the agency’s activities were divided into five areas.

“We also certify electrical installation personnel, who are the personnel responsible for carrying out electrical installations throughout the country through certification.

”We ensure they are qualified and competent and understand the regulations and standards regarding their roles. We also make sure they regularly update their industry knowledge while we monitor their performance.

“The next area of our mandate is the testing and certification of materials and equipment used in electrical works. We have our meter testing labs across the country where we test meters before they are installed in homes and public places,” he said.

He added that the agency also inspects transformers; assemblers and fabricators, as well as cable manufacturers across the country.

“Through that means, NEMSA ensures that this equipment and materials are tested and certified before it is deployed for use in the country.
