Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard to be interviewed for Everton job

After Rafael Benitez was ousted following Everton’s 2-1 loss to Norwich City, Everton are set to interview Derby County manager Wayne Rooney and former Chelsea manager Frank Lampard for the vacant position.

Roberto Martinez was initially seen as the favourite to join Everton, as contacts between the Belgian FA and the club were established. Martinez’s current employers, however, blocked the move – likely to the relief of those at Goodison Park, who have previously argued for Martinez’s managerial methods.

A Manchester United legend, Wayne Rooney, is under-appreciated at Derby County. His task could not have been more difficult with a 21-point deduction to his credit.

Despite that, Rooney has managed to salvage the Rams, who are currently nine points off safety, giving them a fighting chance. As the off-pitch chaos continues, Rooney will have to start thinking more about himself as a manager.

Lampard has not returned to management since leaving Chelsea in 2020. However, he has the chance to redeem himself in his new role at Everton.

Unlike Stamford Bridge, this will be a project that allows him to grow, not one filled with overbearing pressures.

The search is still on to fill the vacancy, with more and more options emerging.

It will take some convincing to get the Everton faithful on anyone’s side, but with their backing the whoever becomes the coach will be on the right track.
