Reigning FIFA Women’s World Cup champions the US Women’s National Team have been knocked out of the 2023 tournament by Sweden on penalties.
The goaless match whuch led to a penalty shootout saw Peter Gerhardsson’s side book their place in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
The penalty shootout started strong for both teams, however, a 4-4 in sudden death and Sweden’s Lina Hurtig’s penalty became controversial, leading the referee to call for a VAR check and it was pronounced a successful goal as the ball had rolled 1mm over the line.
The scoreline ended 5-4 to Sweden, allowing them to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Women’s World Cup.
