The Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) has announced that a series of submarine cable cuts have led to internet outages for several African internet service providers.
The affected cables include the West African Cable System, African Coast to Europe, SAT3, and MainOne. These disruptions were primarily due to incidents occurring in Cote d’Ivoire and Senegal, which also affected connectivity in Portugal.
The NCC, in a statement released by the Director of Public Affairs, Reuben Muoka, also highlighted similar challenges faced by other undersea cables such as Seacom, Europe India Gateway, and Asia-Africa-Europe 1.
These cables, crucial for traffic from Europe to the East Coast of Africa, experienced cuts around the Red Sea, leading to service degradation along these routes.
The disruptions have prompted a wave of frustration among subscribers, many of whom took to social media to express their difficulties in making phone calls and accessing online services. In response, the NCC assured the public that repair efforts are underway, with cable operators working diligently to restore connectivity.
The commission expressed optimism that services would be reinstated in the affected regions promptly.
MTN Nigeria, the country’s leading telecommunications provider, also acknowledged the connectivity issues, appealing for patience from its subscribers as it works to resolve the problem.
