In an arraignment before the Tinubu Magistrate’s Court, Lagos Island, Mr Paul Davids, 41, and Leslie Gasarah, 40, were accused of obtaining N17, 500.000 from a businesswoman, Fathia Alao, under false pretense.
The Onikan Police Command operatives arrested the defendants and charged them for stealing, impersonating, and obtaining money under false pretenses.
Police prosecuting counsel, Jimoh Joseph informed the court that the defendant committed the offence on 28 July, 2020 in Lagos.
Joseph told Judge Alogba that the defendants falsely represented themselves to the complainant as employees of Image Global Solutions Limited which they were and collected money from her to invest in the company so that she would earn more interest.
He revealed that after the defendants collected the money from the complainant, they altered their phones and absconded with it.
When the complainant was unable to locate the defendants anymore, she reported the matter to the police, who tracked and arrested them at a hideout.
The charges against the defendants were punishable under sections 411, 315, 287(7) and 350 of the criminal laws of Lagos State, 2015.
The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges, and Magistrate Alogba granted them N500, 000 bail each with two sureties each in like sum.
The case was adjourned until 15 January, 2022, with the defendants to remain at the correctional facility until they meet the bail conditions.
