Leading Nigerian figures will tackle economic and media issues at the 20th All Nigeria Editors Conference in Bayelsa, November 7-9.

The 20th All Nigeria Editors Conference (ANEC), scheduled from November 7-9 in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, is set to host discussions on Nigeria’s economic and security challenges.

Distinguished leaders including Vice-President Kashim Shettima, Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri, Minister of Budget Atiku Abubakar Bagudu, Minister of Information Mohammed Idris, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, and the President of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA), Dele Oye, will lead the sessions.

Themed “Economic Growth and Development Strategies in Resource-Rich Country,” the conference will delve into pressing issues impacting Nigeria’s economic landscape and media industry.

Prince Nduka Obaigbena, Chairman of THISDAY/Arise Media Group, will chair the event, where speakers will outline strategies for sustainable economic growth amid rising inflation, currency fluctuations, and high energy costs.

Media professionals, including Aremo Segun Osoba, former Governor of Ogun State; Uncle Sam Amuka, Publisher of Vanguard Newspaper; Frank Aigbogun, Publisher of BusinessDay; and Azu Ishiekwene, Senior Vice Chairman of LEADERSHIP Newspaper Group, will address critical topics.

These sessions will focus on media financing, challenges and opportunities in AI-generated storytelling, and future pathways for global journalism.

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) anticipates over 350 editors and media executives will attend, with presentations from key private, public, and non-governmental sectors.

As Nigeria’s government continues reforms initiated in May 2023 to stabilise the economy, the conference will explore the potential for comprehensive policies to address economic concerns such as a 40% poverty rate, with 88 million Nigerians below the poverty line, and limited job opportunities that lead many skilled workers to emigrate.

Efforts to counter inflationary pressures have included cash transfers to 15 million households, alongside tighter monetary policy. However, Nigeria remains ranked seventh-lowest in human capital globally, an issue the conference aims to address.

A secondary focus will centre on media viability and sustainability. The NGE supports mechanisms to safeguard intellectual property and generate diverse revenue for publishers.

These discussions aim to strengthen Nigeria’s media landscape to thrive amid changing market conditions.

Established in 2004, ANEC has consistently provided a platform for policy discussions vital to national development.

This year, the event will also celebrate the induction of 12 new editors into the Guild, furthering its commitment to journalism excellence in Nigeria.
