On Wednesday, August 4, 2021, During the Tokyo Olympics Puma announced the termination of its four-year deal with the Athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN) in a letter signed by the company’s director Manuel Edlheimb.

It was gathered that the $2.76m deal with the German company had led to a major crisis in the AFN headed by Ibrahim Gusau, splitting the sports body into two factions.

Signed on July 24, 2019, in Doha, the deal was due for expiration in 2022, with the agreement that Puma would supply jerseys to all age categories of the athletics team for free, while also gifting Olympics gold, silver and bronze medalists $15000, $5000 and $3000 respectively.

At the beginning of the Tokyo Olympics, concerns were raised by Nigerians on social media about the jerseys being worn by the athletes as they weren’t bearing the Puma logo, hence, it didn’t come as a surprise when Puma pulled the plug on the contract with the AFN on Wednesday.

Earlier in the week, a TikTok video made by Chukwuebuka Enekwechi showed him washing his jersey with the caption, “When you made the Olympic Finals, but you only have one jersey” thus, insinuating that just one jersey was made available by the AFN for him.

We hope the feud between the Gisau-led AFN and the Ministry of Sports and Development headed by Mr Sunday Dare is quelled soon, so Nigeria can shine more in Athletics.
