President Bola Tinubu has sent his congratulations to Sir Keir Starmer, leader of the Labour Party, following their triumph in the United Kingdom general election.
Starmer’s victory positions him as the new Prime Minister to succeed Rishi Sunak, the outgoing Conservative Prime Minister, who conceded defeat and stepped down as party leader before submitting his resignation to the King.
In a statement signed by Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Tinubu lauded Starmer’s determination and leadership.
Drawing from his own experience as a former opposition leader in Nigeria, Tinubu acknowledged the resilience and strategic efforts that led to the Labour Party’s victory after 14 years.
“The President states that the party’s ability to reform, mobilise, and position itself for victory after 14 years clearly affirms the leadership qualities of Sir Starmer,” the statement read.
President Tinubu also extended his congratulations to the citizens and government of the United Kingdom, describing the UK as a longstanding model of democracy and a crucial partner to Nigeria. He expressed his eagerness to strengthen relations between the two nations, focusing on mutual interests in fortifying democratic institutions and fostering a safer, more prosperous future for their people.
The Labour Party secured a decisive victory to end the Conservative Party’s 14-year rule.
In his victory speech, Starmer proclaimed, “We did it! Change begins now.”
