The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) successfully contained a fire incident early Wednesday at Alayabiagba Market, Mobil Road, Boundary, Ajegunle. Lagosians are advised to switch off all electrical appliances at the close of business each day.
A statement by the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, reported that the agency received a distress call about a fire outbreak on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at approximately 2:26 am and promptly activated its emergency response plan.
Upon arrival at the scene, the LASEMA team observed that 10 shops in Alayabiagba Market were engulfed in flames. “Further information gathered at the incident scene revealed that the fire started in one of the shops immediately after public power was restored,” Oke-Osanyintolu explained.
“The fire subsequently spread to other shops because most of the goods stored were curtains and clothing materials.”
He noted, “No loss of life nor injury was recorded at the incident scene. However, the fire razed 10 shops in the market and destroyed several goods stored in the affected shops. The fire was completely extinguished by the combined efforts of stakeholders and prevented from spreading to other shops and adjoining buildings.”
LASEMA, Lagos State Fire Service, LASAMBUS, and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) were responders at the scene. Oke-Osanyintolu stated that the agency’s operatives ensured the fire was extinguished to prevent further spread and coordinated with all stakeholders to manage the incident and avert any secondary incidents.
The Permanent Secretary advised Lagosians to switch off all electrical appliances at the end of each business day, install fire hydrants, and embrace all fire safety precautions at home, offices, and markets.
