Members of the House of Representatives are requesting an increment in their salaries and allowances amid the harsh effects of the fuel subsidy removal.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the demand was made after a meeting the lawmakers had on July 11 after going into an executive session during plenary.
Following the complaints from the members about the salaries and allowances, the House was forced to go into executive session in order to reduce the tense atmosphere.
The aggrieved lawmakers also inquired from the Speaker, Rep. Tajudeen Abass, why the payment of their salaries and allowances was being delayed, with some opting for loans.
“So nobody talked about any money or whether we have been paid or not”, the source added.
Speaking further, the lawmaker shared that their request is hinged on the current economic reality following the subsidy removal.
He also pointed out that a review of their salaries and allowances was not promised by the Speaker as such a demand could only be part of the budget after due process.
According to the legislator, the speaker however told his colleagues that their demand on review of their salaries and allowances were not in the 2023 budget.
