Two students from Lagos State University (LASU) were struck by stray bullets outside the school campus in a popular student residential area called PPL late Monday. The incident occurred around 8 pm as the students went to purchase food.
The identities of the victims and the shooter(s) remain unknown. However, reports indicate that the students were hit during an exchange of gunfire.
One student, tweeting under the handle #belikebaddy, alerted others by writing, “Two students have been shot at PPL, Ojo, Lagos. Please, students of LASU, stay indoors and don’t go out.”
Kappo Olawale, the Senior Special Adviser on Students’ Union Affairs to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, confirmed the incident.
Tweeting as #kappozino, Olawale stated that he had been in contact with the university’s Student Union President, who confirmed that the victims were in stable condition. “I have kept in touch with the President of the Student Union. Information passed just now is that the students have been stabilised. The Dean of Students was also on the ground to ensure they were properly attended to. Thanks to God!” he tweeted.
An anonymous student shared with our correspondent that the victims were shot while buying food. In a video seen by our correspondent, one of the victims, a female, was shown lying on a bed with her shirt soaked in blood.
The source described the events, saying, “It happened around past 8 pm at PPL. They went to get food outside, so they heard gunshots, and they ran away. When they got home, they observed that the bullets had hit the male on the neck and arm. Due to the bleeding, he was rushed to the LASU Health Centre and then to Igando Medical Hospital. He’s already responding to treatment.”
The source also confirmed that the Dean of Students Affairs was with the students at the hospital to ensure they received proper care.
Attempts to contact SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, were unsuccessful as he did not respond to a text message sent to his mobile number at the time of filing this report.
