The leadership of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have issued a directive for their members across university campuses and inter-university centres nationwide to commence a seven-day industrial action starting from Monday, 18 March.
This move comes as a result of unresolved issues with the Nigerian government regarding unpaid withheld salaries of their members.
In a memo dated Friday, 15 March, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of both unions, represented by SSANU National President Mohammed Ibrahim and NASU General Secretary Peters Adeyemi, has called for total compliance with the strike directive from their respective branch leaders.
The memo emphasizes the need for a comprehensive and total shutdown of services, with no exceptions to be made.
The decision to embark on this industrial action stems from a perceived disparity in the government’s treatment of their members in comparison to those of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), whose withheld salaries have been paid. The unions express dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of their grievances, leading to the current escalation.
Branch leaders of NASU and SSANU are have been instructed to ensure strict adherence to the strike directive, with the aim of compelling the government to address and resolve the outstanding issues related to their members’ withheld salaries.
