Nigeria is, without a doubt, a music-loving country as Nigerians will always find a way to groove to new music, whether it’s local or foreign.
Spotify has released data on Nigeria’s top 10 music cities in honour of Nigeria’s month.
Afrobeats has established itself as a dominant sound for Nigerian musicians. The Amapiano genre, which originated in South Africa is also gaining popularity in Nigeria.
Songs like Falz’s Squander, Davido’s High, and Burna Boy’s Yaba Buluku embrace the Amapiano-inspired blend of deep house, jazz, and lounge music.
Not surprising, however, according to Spotify, between July and September 2021, Lagos State, Nigeria’s entertainment centre, outperformed the rest of the country in terms of music listenership. The top three songs being Gbese by Positivv’s and Yung Felix’s, Omah Lay’s “Understand” and Fireboy DML’s Peru respectively.
According to other sources, some of Nigeria’s most popular musicians include Wizkid, Lay Omah, DML Fireboy, Tems and Rema respectively. This shows that Nigerians are clearly displaying their love for their country in tangible ways, with indigenous artists leading the charge in listening trends.
