Opeyemi Bamidele calls for improved primary healthcare as his outreach treats 16,000 people, addressing ailments like hepatitis and diabetes.

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has urged state governors to prioritise grassroots healthcare, highlighting that poverty and inadequate healthcare access cause preventable deaths among Nigerians.

He made this call while concluding the second phase of his free medical outreach in Ado Ekiti, which has provided critical treatments for thousands of constituents.

Bamidele revealed that over 16,000 people have benefited from the initiative, aimed at addressing ailments such as hepatitis, hypertension, diabetes, hernia, and various visual impairments.

The programme, carried out in partnership with the Industrial Arbitration Panel, offers free diagnosis, treatments, and eyeglasses to those in need.

The Punch reports that 9,400 individuals received treatment in the second phase, building on the 6,600 beneficiaries from the programme’s first phase.

Chronic health cases identified during the outreach were referred to specialist hospitals, with Bamidele pledging to cover the medical expenses for those requiring advanced care.

Addressing the gathering, Bamidele expressed concern over Nigeria’s healthcare challenges, stating:

“Poor access of many Nigerians to quality healthcare remains a snag in the attainment of universal health coverage. Let me advise our governors to invest more in the primary healthcare sector that remains the closest to the poor masses.”

He emphasised that the initiative aims to provide relief for people who cannot afford medical treatment:

“What we are doing is to give succour to those being afflicted by diseases who don’t have the means to seek medical treatments. Going by what some of the beneficiaries said, most of them had been experiencing the sicknesses for years, but today, they have been treated.”

The outreach has been widely praised for its impact, with the Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Oba Adeyemo Adejugbe, commending Bamidele’s commitment to improving the lives of his constituents.

The senator further reiterated his dedication to addressing chronic health issues and ensuring his constituents receive the dividends of democracy.

This large-scale intervention highlights the critical role of primary healthcare investment in reducing mortality rates and achieving universal health coverage.
