Themed “Local Government Autonomy: Bringing Governance and Economic Development Close to The People – A Case Study of Lagos State,” the event brought together past local government chairmen from across Nigeria.

Represented by Bolaji Robert, the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development, Sanwo-Olu highlighted the importance of local governments in fostering democracy and community empowerment.

“As former local government chairmen, you have first-hand experience of the challenges associated with governing at the grassroots level.

Your wealth of knowledge will undoubtedly enrich discussions as we strive to strengthen local governments and empower our communities,” Sanwo-Olu stated.

The governor noted that Lagos State has consistently supported local government independence by devolving powers and resources to the third tier of government.

He emphasised that local autonomy is critical to achieving governance that directly impacts citizens’ lives.

National President of ASELGON, Albert Asipa, commended Lagos for its leadership in upholding local government autonomy.

Explaining the decision to host the event in Lagos, Asipa said, “Governor Sanwo-Olu has demonstrated a commitment to sustaining LG autonomy, even defending it at the Supreme Court when the Federal Government challenged state governors.”

The chairman of the organising committee, Kamal Bayewu, also praised Lagos as a model for other states.

“In Lagos, we’ve been enjoying autonomy, and it has significantly contributed to grassroots development and economic growth.

We hope our colleagues will take lessons from Lagos and implement them in their states,” he said.

The retreat provided an opportunity for former chairmen to reflect on their achievements in 2024 and outline strategies for the coming year.

It also underscored the importance of local government autonomy in fostering accountability, monitoring projects, and ensuring transparency in governance.

As discussions continue, the Lagos State government remains committed to driving innovation and progress in grassroots administration, setting a benchmark for other states to follow.
