Lagos residents have commended the State Government over the “Ounje Eko” initiative introduced by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu Administration to cushion the effects of the economic hardship. The discounted Sunday Food Markets kicked off on Sunday across the five divisions of the State.
Staple food items, including rice, garri, beans, eggs and pepper, were sold at a 25% discount to excited residents who trooped out to different locations to participate in the scheme.
The State Commissioner for Agriculture, Bisola Olusanya led the Ministry’s officials to some of the locations while members of the Special Advisory Committee appointed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu were also at some locations to monitor the exercise.
Olusanya acknowledged the few hiccups in some locations which ran out of foodstuff due to the mammoth crowd present, but added that the situation was promptly corrected as more supplies came in to meet the demands of residents.
According to her, “Today’s process is a test run of the initiative. The Ministry of Agriculture, therefore, solicit the cooperation of residents to make the initiative more successful going forward”.
Residents praised the Government for the good initiative, which they said would go a long way in alleviating some of their economic challenges.
They also applauded the orderliness at the markets as payment and goods collection were smooth. Security was tight, with the Police, Neighbourhood Watch, RRS and other law enforcement personnel present at each market.
