Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, has announced that today, March 11, 2024, marks the beginning of the month of Ramadan. As the spiritual leader of Muslims in Nigeria, the Sultan’s declaration is based on reports of moon sighting across various parts of the country on Sunday, the 29th day of the Month of Shaban, indicating the commencement of Ramadan 1445.
The Sultan confirmed receiving information from Muslim leaders nationwide about the moon sighting, leading to the decision to declare the start of Ramadan. He has called upon the entire Muslim community in the country to begin fasting in accordance with Islamic teachings.
Recognizing the current challenges facing the nation, the Sultan emphasized the importance of using this holy month as a period of prayer against the spread of insecurity. He also encouraged Muslims to pray for their leaders, asking for guidance in fulfilling their duties with the fear of God.
Additionally, the Sultan advised all Muslims, both in Nigeria and abroad, to observe the fast with a deep sense of piety. He highlighted the significance of supporting the less fortunate during this period, urging the wealthy to provide food to the underprivileged throughout the Holy month. This call underscores the spirit of community and compassion that is central to the observance of Ramadan.
