The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has initiated a thorough investigation into a reported breach of citizen data by XpressVerify. This investigation was announced in a statement by Abisoye Coker-Odusote, the Director General of NIMC, through Kayode Adegoke, the Commission’s Corporate Communications head.
It has been clarified that XpressVerify does not hold a license from NIMC to provide National Identification Number (NIN) verification services, ensuring that the integrity of Nigeria’s National Identity Database remains uncompromised.
The Commission has assured the public of the safety and security of their data, stating, “There is no data breach of any sort and the Citizens’ data is safe and secure in Nigeria’s National Identity Database.”
Coker-Odusote has ordered a detailed probe to ascertain whether any of NIMC’s Tokenisation verification agents have violated the terms of their licensing agreement, either directly or indirectly through sub-licensees.
This action follows a directive from the National Commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, which also called for a full-scale investigation into the incident.
