The Food Bank Charity Association of Nigeria has raised an alarm over looming food insecurity following reports of how bandits are taxing farmers before harvesting their produce.
The Association’s Chairman, Muhammad Sani Garba said it is disheartening that bandits attack innocent Nigerians, but directly targeting farmers is of a greater risk, especially to the Nation’s food security agenda.
Garba said, “This is a serious challenge facing not only low enforcement agencies rather it may affect Nigeria’s food Security Agenda, which may cause scarcity of food in the country.”
Nigeria is already facing untold hardship due to inflation of food prices.
Last week alone, there were reports from Kaduna, Katsina, and Zamfara stating how farmers can not access their farmlands without paying a tax, sometimes twice.
The Food Bank Charity Association Chairman says as it is, many poor Nigerians sleep hungry, thus the need for security agencies and the country’s leadership to address this challenge.
He expressed fear that not nipping this problem in the bud, would cause greater hardship that would unravel itself as food scarcity.
