President Bola Tinubu and his Brazilian counterpart, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva have engaged in bilateral discussion on establishing direct flights between Lagos, Nigeria, and São Paulo, Brazil in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

This is according to a statement signed by Fredrick Nwabufo, senior special adviser to Nigeria’s president, on public engagement, who emphasized Lula da Silva’s interest in exploring collaboration opportunities in the aviation sector between both countries.

Lula da Silva highlighted the necessity for formal talks between the two governments to address the current absence of direct air connectivity between Lagos and São Paulo.

The Brazilian president stressed the importance of strengthening relations across various sectors, including academia, culture, commerce, agriculture, industry, and trade. Despite a previous trade volume exceeding $10 billion, he acknowledged a significant drop to $1.6 billion and pledged to enhance bilateral ties during his remaining tenure.

Tinubu acknowledged Nigeria’s economic potential and resilience, highlighting the country’s progress amid reform challenges.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to bolstering key sectors such as healthcare, education, and agriculture while comprehensively combating corruption.

Additionally, Tinubu highlighted ongoing efforts to streamline business operations and remove obstacles to investment. Drawing inspiration from Brazil’s progressive reforms in sectors like social security and infrastructure, he expressed eagerness to implement similar initiatives in Nigeria, particularly in energy production and research.

The meeting between the two leaders signals a positive step towards enhancing bilateral cooperation and exploring new avenues for collaboration. The potential establishment of a direct flight route between Lagos and São Paulo holds promising opportunities for economic and cultural exchange between Nigeria and Brazil.
