The Lagos State Coordinator of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Mr Lucas Koyejo, has urged citizens of the state to speak up whenever their rights are abused.

Koyejo delivered the advice in an interview in Lagos on Friday on the sidelines of a road walk to mark the International Day for Human Rights.

According to news reports, the United Nations established December 10th as International Day for Human Rights in 1948, following the Second World War.

The theme for the 2021 International Day for Human Rights is “All Equal, All Human”.

According to the coordinator, the commission has recently received more petitions than in the past as a result of growing public awareness of human rights.

“In Lagos state, there is increase in awareness about human rights, which explains the increase in number of petitions we are getting from people and organisations.

“Not as if the violations have not been there before, maybe, people were not protesting, but now, many people are speaking out. More people are bringing complaints to the commission now.

“People now know places to go to complain. They have voices, they have social media. There is more access to the media that can help voice their violations. This is making people to be aware of what is going on,” he said.

Koyejo commended the state’s Ministry of Women, Youths, and Social Development, as well as the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, security agencies, and the Ministry of Justice, for their contributions to the battle against human rights violations.

He advised people to be alert in order to preserve their rights, emphasizing that those who have had their rights violated should also contact the commission, appropriate agencies, and the media.
