The Market Authority Bill, which seeks to enhance the organization and regulation of market activities in Lagos, has successfully scaled its second reading at the Lagos State House of Assembly.

During the session, presided over by Speaker Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, the bill was referred to the House Committee on Local Government for further consideration, with a report expected in two weeks.

Hon. Sanni Okanlawon, Chairman of the Local Government Committee, explained that the bill aims to address certain anomalies in the existing laws, ensuring that all markets in Lagos are properly registered.

He stressed the importance of regulating market activities to foster a better business environment in the state.

Rauf Age-Suleiman, a fellow lawmaker, noted that the composition of the proposed Market Board is inclusive, while Deputy Majority Leader Adedamola Richard Kasunmu pointed out that the Iyaloja-General’s role in the Market Advisory Council was crucial and should not overlap with her duties in the Market Board.

Hon. Sa’ad Olumoh highlighted that the bill mandates the ratification of board members by the House and would prevent traders from self-appointing titles. He also expressed confidence that the Iyaloja-General would provide necessary advice for the market’s smooth operation.

Further supporting the bill, Hon. Stephen Ogundipe expressed optimism that Lagosians would appreciate the proposed law, while Hon. Nureni Akinsanya emphasised the importance of appointing honest individuals to market leadership roles.

Hon. Aro Moshood added that the bill addresses market cleanliness, efficient management, and alleviates traffic congestion caused by market activities.
