Man charged over alleged palm oil fraud

Wisdom Udowo, 35, was arrested on Monday by the police for allegedly defrauding a customer of N42,000 under the guise of delivering palm oil.

Udowo appeared before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The defendant, who had no known residence, is charged with two counts of theft and acquiring under false pretenses.

He, however, pleaded not guilty.

According to the prosecution, Insp. Courage Ekhueorohan, Udowo committed the crimes in 2021 at No. 29, Onitana St., Bode Thomas, Surulere, Lagos.

Ekhueorohan claimed that the defendant promised to provide four jerrycans of palm oil from the eastern part of the country to the complainant, Isiaka Magaji, at a cost of N42,000.

However, according to the prosecutor, the defendant did not supply the palm oil or return the money, which is in violation of Sections 287 and 314 (3) of the Lagos State Criminal Law of 2015.

M. I. Dan-Oni, the Magistrate then gave the defendant bail in the amount of N50,000 with one surety in the same amount.

The case was then postponed until Nov. 12 for trial.
