Former Lagos lawmaker Dipo Olorunrinu has praised President Bola Tinubu for enhancing the All Progressives Congress’s (APC) electoral prospects by advocating for local government autonomy.
Olorunrinu, who represented Amuwo-Odofin Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly from 2015 to 2019, shared his views in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday.
This commendation follows the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling on Thursday, mandating the Federal Government to commence direct payments to local governments’ exclusive accounts, bypassing the State Joint Local Government Account system. The judgment arose from a lawsuit filed by the Attorney-General of the Federation, citing local governments’ struggles to access their funds.
“Local government autonomy is one of the ways that the APC has promoted itself,” Olorunrinu stated.
“President Tinubu is a very intelligent person, who knows the impact of these things. My advice is that people should buy into his policies and reforms, and give him some time to perform and allow these things to work.
“The removal of fuel subsidies was a wise thing to do.”
Olorunrinu believes that local government autonomy will enable citizens to better experience the dividends of democracy and foster higher expectations from the Federal Government.
He emphasized that effective governance at the federal level is contingent upon the proper functioning of local governments.
“Even with the present system, it takes a very active council chairman to understand that whatever resources you are given from the federal or state government is never enough; you need to partner with the residents of your locality,” Olorunrinu noted.
The former lawmaker’s remarks underscore the significance of local government autonomy in enhancing grassroots governance and supporting President Tinubu’s broader policy agenda.
