Mrs Aina Odetayo, a 35-year-old lawyer, was brought before an Igbosere Magistrate Court in Tinubu for allegedly assaulting her 12-year-old nephew by burning his back with a hot knife from the fire for stealing her N500.

The Police have filed a three-count charge against Odetayo, including assault, infliction of injury, and obstruction of treatment.

The lawyer, who lives in 13A, Green Hill Estate in Lagos’ Agege district, was summoned by Magistrate Azeez Alogba.

Inspector Michael Unah, the prosecutor, told the court that the offender allegedly assaulted and infringed on a minor’s right.

He added that the event occurred on November 14, 2021, at 13A, Green Hill Estate, Agege, Lagos.

Unah said, ” Odetayo beat up the minor who is her nephew, burnt and inflicted injury on his back with a hot knife from the fire.”

The prosecutor added that “The defendant after injuring the minor with a hot knife from the fire, prevented him from being treated at the hospital, of the injuries on his body.”

According to the prosecution, the offences were committed in violation of Sections 10,13, and 12 of the Lagos State Child’s Rights Law of 2019.

The defendant, on the other hand, had pleaded not guilty to the charge.

As a result, Magistrate Alogba granted the defendant bail on her own recognizance and ordered her to appear in court with her call to bar certificate.

The case was then postponed till November 30th for a hearing.
