The Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board (LASTVEB) has organised a one-day workshop to upskill counsellors on the application of effective techniques in Guidance Counseling in Colleges.
The aim is to acquaint participants with the adaptation method needed to cater to students from diverse cultural backgrounds as obtained in Nigeria. The workshop was held recently at LASTVEB Skill for Work Centre, Government Technical College, Agidingbi.
Speaking at the event, the Executive Secretary of LASTVEB, Ms. Moronke Azeez, represented by Mr. Adeniran Ogunsiji, the Director of Education Management and Information System, emphasised that the workshop is part of LASTVEB’s ongoing commitment to promoting quality technical and vocational education in Lagos State.

“Recognising the crucial role that counsellors play in shaping the educational and career paths of students, the workshop aims to equip them with the necessary skills and techniques to better support and guide students in making informed decisions about their future”, she added.
According to Azeez, the workshop featured a wide range of expert speakers and facilitators who shared their knowledge and insights on various topics relating to counselling techniques, interactive sessions, practical exercises, and case studies to enhance their counselling skills and stay updated with the latest trends and best practices in the field.
According to her, the key topics covered during the workshop include Effective Counseling Skills for Effective Practice, Recognizing and Handling Students Exposed to Disruptive Behaviours, Career Guidance, Mental Health Support and Counseling strategies, Building Resilience and Emotional Intelligence in Students, Enhancing Communication and Active Listening Skills, and Ethical Considerations in Counseling Practice.
“It also featured a presentation from Paroche Reachout Foundation, a non-governmental organisation which campaigns against substance usage abuse, addiction and brings about the desired and unprecedented post-rehabilitation care for any victims of addiction’, she added.
Earlier in her welcome address, the Director of Guidance and Counseling Unit, LASTVEB, Mrs. Blessing Okusanya stated that the workshop was necessitated by the need to continue to hone the skills of Counsellors in Colleges to be in tune with International best practices of the 21st century
