Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Wednesday detailed the significant projects the state embarked on that propelled its economy over the past decades.
Speaking on Wednesday at the ongoing Afreximbank’s Trade and Investment Forum in The Bahamas, the governor emphasized the transformative impact of the projects to combat environmental challenges and fostering commercial growth.
Sanwo-Olu said two key projects were initiated under the leadership of his predecessor, now President Bola Tinubu, who was governor in 1999-2006.
He said the first project focused on the issue of land erosion caused by the Atlantic Ocean.
“Under the leadership of my predecessor who now happened to be the president of the country, Bola Tinubu, Lagos championed two-levelled ambitious interlink projects,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
He said it involved massive land reclamation efforts to mitigate land loss due to the ocean’s encroachment.
“First, a massive reclamation of the Atlantic Ocean to reduce land loss over the course of the century to the ravaging surge of the ocean,” he explained.
The second major initiative was the construction of a 10-kilometer-long stone and concrete barrier, known as the Great Wall of Lagos, to protect the coastline.
“Two, the construction of what is now known as the great wall of Lagos. Almost 10 kilometer long stone and concrete barrier to protect the coastline,” Sanwo-Olu noted.
Consequently, these led to the creation of Eko Atlantic City, an area that has become a global commercial hub.
“That project allowed us to create a brand-new city, the Eko Atlantic City, which has since then become a global model for environmentally responsive climate action seat. This even predates the Paris Climate agenda,” Sanwo-Olu added.
The governor’s remarks revealed the long-term vision and strategic planning that have positioned Lagos as a key player in global commerce and climate action.
