The General Manager, Lagos Traffic Radio 96.1fm, Tayo Akanle, has charged his workforce to be diligent in discharging their duties and always aim for perfection in everything they do to achieve the mandate of the station.
Akanle stated this during a one-day in-house training programme organised for the station’s presenters with the theme: “Effective Communication in the 21st Century – Pronunciation of Names in Focus”.
He averred that accuracy in pronunciation of names and places in news reporting cannot be over-emphasised, hence the need for the training.
He also stressed the importance of training and re-training in making staff more efficient and effective, which according to him, is a priority of the State Government.
The Deputy Director of Programmes, Victor Oteri encouraged the trainees to tap into the pool of knowledge of the facilitator to learn new ways and modalities of accurate name pronunciation as it will reduce mistakes of presenters during news reporting.
He also opined that on-the-job training is the best path to productivity and effective service delivery.
Mr. Olamilekan Ajirotutu, a.k.a ‘Adisa Koowe’, a veteran broadcaster and facilitator at the training, urged the trainees to be careful and mindful of the pronunciation of names and places, stressing that the bearer of the name will not be happy with the station for wrong pronunciation of his or her name.
He further emphasised the need for the participants to fully inculcate the correct pronunciation of all names, particularly Yoruba names, maintaining that it is unacceptable for a news broadcaster to pronounce a Yoruba name wrongly in a Yoruba-speaking State like Lagos.
