The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) will host the Lagos Regional Engineering Stakeholders Summit on February 18, 2025.

The summit, which will focus on COREN’s recent restructuring and reforms, aims to provide a platform for discussion on enhancing professional standards and governance within Nigeria’s engineering sector.

The event, announced in a statement by COREN President and Chairman, Prof Sadig Abubakar, will be graced by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who will serve as the Special Guest of Honour.

A key feature of the summit will be a keynote address on the role of engineering in sustainable infrastructure development and economic growth, with a particular focus on Lagos State and Nigeria as a whole.

COREN, the body responsible for regulating engineering education, training, and practice in Nigeria, reiterated its commitment to improving industry standards, ensuring compliance, and promoting innovation.

The summit will bring together policymakers, industry leaders, academic experts, and engineering professionals to discuss COREN’s legislative and operational reforms aimed at enhancing the efficiency and governance of the sector.

A key highlight of the summit will be the inauguration of the Lagos Regional Steering Committee, which will oversee COREN’s Regional and State Offices.

The committee will be responsible for ensuring the effective implementation of regulatory activities, such as engineering training, investigations, and compliance monitoring.

The summit will also mark the introduction of an expanded regulatory framework covering 11 engineering sectors.

This restructuring aims to improve governance, deepen sector specialization, and strengthen the regulatory framework within Nigeria’s engineering industry.

Prof Abubakar emphasised the summit’s importance in aligning Nigeria’s engineering practices with international standards, calling it a unique opportunity for professionals and policymakers to shape the future of engineering practice in the country.

COREN encourages stakeholders, engineering professionals, and the general public to participate in this vital national discourse, which is expected to influence the future trajectory of engineering in Nigeria.
