The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Central Business Districts (CBD), Mrs Bola Olumegbon Lawal, has led State CBD officials in efforts to advocate against street trading and unlawful parking on the island Business District.

At the public enlightenment programme, the Special Adviser criticized the unlawful practice of street trading and selling on pathways and drainage alignments within business districts.

She criticised the actions of commercial drivers, who are a nuisance on the Island by parking anywhere on the road and clogging up traffic.

She said, “Irresponsible activities such as illegal parking on the road to obstruct traffic flow and extension of shops onto the roads and walkway are rife in this part of the city. We want perpetrators to desist from these acts or face prosecution”.

She noted that the enlightenment and advocacy exercise is to warn against illegality, adding that the Agency is set to enforce traffic and environmental laws within the business districts.

“I want to implore leaders of markets and commercial drivers associations to call their members to order as it has been discovered that shop owners give out wares to traders to sell on roads while commercial drivers continue to park on the road to pick passengers, causing major traffic within the business district”, she said.

While condemning the habit of mounting power generators on roofs of shops and buildings, she called on the owners of such generators to bring them down immediately as such acts are dangerous and can cause fire outbreaks within the business district.

The Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Lagos Island branch, Mr Azeez Olakunle Lawal (Kunle Poly) who led other members of the Union to the programme pledged to support the government to rid Lagos Island business district of illegal street trading and indiscriminate parking of vehicles.
