The Lagos State Government has commenced a demolition exercise at Obalende Under-Bridge to remove unauthorized structures and evict inhabitants.
This was announced by the Lagos State Commissioner of Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab in a post on his official X account on Wednesday.
According to him, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, ordered the demolition after he inspected the area alongside the Commissioners and Special Advisers for Environment and Water Resources and Transport.
Sanwo-Olu said the informal settlements was contributing to environmental degradation and public health concerns.
Wahab said the initiative is one of the state’s measures to enhance cleanliness and the overall well-being of Lagos.
“Subsequent to the demolition exercise by Lagos State Building Control Agency(LABSCA), the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) Operations Unit has started the cleanup, using mechanical shovels and tipper trucks.
“This action, part of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu Administration’s THEMES+ Agenda, aims to reclaim and transform the area for the broader community’s benefit, moving beyond its past as a haven for a few illegal occupants,” the post further stated.
The Obalende underbridge demolition comes two weeks after the state government began the demolition of unauthorized structures at the Ijora Under-Bridge, following a 5-day eviction notice to the occupants.
