Residents of Aleke (Ikorodu North) and Igbodu (Ikosi-Ejirin, Epe), communities in Lagos State have been sensitized on the need to imbibe good hygiene practices, especially in line with the Water, Hygiene Sector (WASH) guidelines.
At the conclusion of a two-day sensitization program, Mrs Kikelomo Bolarinwa, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs, stated that the goal was to raise awareness of the risks associated with open defecation and inadequate sanitation in order to promote better hygienic practices in the rural communities of Lagos.
Bolarinwa, who has represented the Director of Technical Services, Abiodun Donkuwo, added: “The programme is to educate and re-educate residents on how to achieve safe drinking water, practice proper personal hygiene and shun open defecation in their communities.
“It is also a preventive measure put in place by this present administration. The programme, which had held in Badagry, will spread to other rural communities to prevent the spread of germs and infectious diseases that can cause physical, emotional, mental and financial stress to residents.”
A facilitator, Mrs Sanni Anibire, buttressed that maintaining personal hygiene such as cleaning the body every day, and washing hands with soap and water, among others, should be cultivated to protect against preventable diseases.
