Dowen College, Lagos, has given 46 scholarships to its students in celebration of the 26th Founders Day of the school.

Speaking during the thanksgiving service and prize-giving, the principal, Dr Adebisi Layiwola, noted that the school was committed to academic and moral excellence.

She said that students who distinguished themselves, got scholarships and awards, adding that their tuition fees for an academic year were waived.

“We gave the pupils various scholarships. If you score 90 per cent and above in your studies, automatically, the tuition fees for the next academic year are waived. “Also, those who wrote our entrance examination and scored well got scholarships for six years. We pay great attention to excellence. We remain committed to it, whether in academics or co-curricular activities. We place a premium on academics and character development and nurture our pupils’ talent in other areas,” she said.

Guest speaker, Dr Adebowale Adewusi, advised the students to be diligent and depend on God.

“Be hardworking, it is highly rewarding and you can secure scholarships when you work smartly. Discover yourself and stay away from drugs. Don’t hesitate to ask for help when you have a problem. Do not be involved in unlawful activity, stay focused, stay away from troubles.”

Founder of the institution, Dr Olumide Phillips, and his wife, Dr Toyin Phillips were joined by parents of students and dignitaries of old boys of the Methodist Boys High School (MBHS5963), who were also celebrating 60 years of leaving their school.

Other dignitaries were Bishops of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Rt. Revd. Ifedola Okupevi, Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos; the Rt. Revd. Dr. Kames Odedeji, Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos West; and the Rt. Revd. Akinpelu Johnson, Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos Mainland.
