The Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Red Line officially began partial passenger operations on Wednesday, 28th August 2024.

This milestone, marking a significant step in Lagos State’s transportation development, was announced by Kolawole Ojelabi, head of corporate communication at the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA).

Ojelabi stated that the trains will operate four trips per day between Oyingbo and Agbado.

This initial phase is part of a broader plan that includes training technical and ground staff, installing security features, and conducting a successful six-week trial run to ensure safety, reliability, and efficiency.

In his statement, Ojelabi highlighted that the Red Line system will initially interact with non-fee-paying passengers in organized groups to gather feedback before the commencement of full commercial operations.

He noted that this approach mirrors the strategy used during the test phase of the Blue Line, underscoring the Lagos State Government’s commitment to developing a modern, efficient, and sustainable transportation system.

The Red Line is one of six rail lines and one monorail prescribed for Lagos in the Strategic Transport Master Plan (STMP). This vital transport project connects Lagos with Ogun State, where many workers and business owners residing in Lagos live.

The first phase, a 27-kilometre railroad from Agbado to Oyingbo, aims to provide a reliable and affordable transportation option, thereby reducing traffic congestion and enhancing the quality of life for Lagos residents.

To ensure smooth operations, LAMATA urges the public to refrain from trespassing on railway tracks and avoid causing congestion or accidents along the rail corridor.

The public’s cooperation is essential as Lagos embarks on this historic achievement in its transport sector.
