The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that three dogs involved in a fatal attack on a security guard at Pinnock Estate, Ilasan, Lekki, have been seized.

The incident, which occurred on the night of 5 November 2024, left the unidentified security guard dead. The dogs’ owner, Salisu Mustapha, has also been taken into police custody.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Lagos State Command spokesperson SP Benjamin Hundeyin provided details on the case, confirming that the confiscated dogs are now receiving proper care to prevent any infringement on animal rights.

“Following the unfortunate mauling of a security guard to death by three dogs in Pinnock Estate, Ilasan, Lekki, the Lagos State Police Command has arrested the owner of the dogs, Salisu Mustapha, and confiscated the dogs pending the outcome of discreet investigations that have since commenced,” Hundeyin stated.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Olanrewaju Ishola, also assured Lagos residents that investigations would be thorough and that justice would be pursued.

“The ongoing investigation will be brought to a conclusive end, and justice will be served as appropriate,” he said.

The incident has stirred a considerable response online, with user #Arojinle on X (formerly Twitter) questioning the dogs’ involvement in the security guard’s death.

Hundeyin responded to the claim, stating that the investigation had revealed severe injuries consistent with a dog attack.

“I do not want to post gory pictures of the bloodied bite marks and tears on the victim’s body from head to toe,” he said, adding that the inquiry remains ongoing.

Earlier reports indicated that the dogs, identified as Boerboels, were seen in a viral video approaching the guard’s lifeless body. The video, shared by X user @itzbasito,

suggested that the dogs had roamed freely, allegedly due to the owner unknowingly leaving them unrestrained, leading to the tragic incident.

While some online users have voiced concerns about the animals’ welfare in police custody, Hundeyin clarified on X that the dogs are under the care of the police’s K-9 unit to ensure humane treatment.

“We do not condone cruelty to animals,” he stressed, explaining that measures are in place to ensure the dogs are handled ethically while investigations proceed.

As the investigation unfolds, the Lagos State Police Command aims to deliver closure on the matter for Pinnock Estate residents and the wider Lagos community.
