The Lagos State Government has justified the recent increase in boarding fees from N35,000 to N100,000 in its model colleges, stating that it is necessary to improve the welfare of the students.
This explanation was provided in a statement issued by the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education on Monday, signed by Mr. Ganiu Lawal, the Deputy Director of Public Affairs.
Lawal highlighted that the fee, which has been in place since 2021, is no longer sustainable in 2024.
He noted that students in boarding schools represent a small percentage of the total public school population, and that the review was essential to cover rising costs associated with maintaining the boarding facilities.
The Lagos State Government’s decision, effective from the 2024/2025 academic session starting on September 15, 2024, has sparked dissent among some parents.
However, Lawal defended the increase, stating that the Ministry prioritizes the welfare of the students. He stressed that boarding is a choice for parents, and the fee covers food, janitorial services, and other essential expenses.
Lawal further explained that the schools bear the cost of energy used for cooking, ensuring students receive nutritious meals. He added that the state government also provides free education, including free tuition, technological support, security, and payment of terminal examination fees, such as WAEC.
The Ministry urged parents to consider the rising cost of living and to understand that feeding a child with N35,000 for three months is unrealistic.
Lawal pointed out that Lagos remains considerate with the reviewed rate compared to other federal and state schools across Nigeria.
He stressed that the increase ensures students’ health and mental alertness, with the government taking full responsibility for their well-being while at school.
Lawal called on parents to support the decision for the benefit of their children.
