The Lagos State government, through the Ministry of Women’s Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), has supported 54 women-focused Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) with grants of N250,000 each.
Ms. Bolaji Dada, Lagos Commissioner for Women’s Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, during the Grant-in-Aid presentation, said the gesture was to encourage NGOs whose focus area deals with promoting and improving women’s affairs in the state.
Dada reiterated the commitment and support of the Lagos State Government to the programs that affect the life and well-being of its citizens.
She said: “Today, WAPA is extending our kind gesture and support to 54 women-focused NGOs with a sum of N250,000 each as ‘Grants in Relief’.
“In 2021, a sum of N100,000 each were awarded to 25 women-focused NGOs that excelled in their efforts to alleviate the plight of women residing in Lagos State.
“Having observed that most women-focused NGOs have judiciously used the funds they received last year in various capacities for the public, it behooves us as a responsive government to continue to support more registered NGOs.”
The commissioner said the 54 beneficiaries were selected from the more than 300 NGOs registered under WAPA, based on their work and commitment to women’s empowerment.
However, she urged NGOs to redouble their efforts to reach more women through their various programs.
“Her progress on this journey of giving a voice to the women residents of Lagos is of great interest to us.
“We want you to do more, which is why you are benefiting from this initiative.
“Do not hesitate to let us know about recommendations that will improve a supportive livelihood for our women,” said Dada.
Meanwhile, Ms. Adesola Olusoga-Bello, Vice Coordinator of the African Women Lawyers Association, Lagos Chapter, praised the Lagos State government for supporting women-focused NGOs through grants.
She said: “This is a laudable initiative coming from the Lagos State government through WAPA.
“The state has always shown a passion for things that have to do with women and it is good that they are doing it through various NGOs.”
