Instagram users will soon be able to access exclusive content from their favourite creators. To test this new feature, Instagram has selected 10 creators and influencers, including basketball player Sedona Prince and Bunny Michaels.

Instagram in a blog post said they would begin the subscription testing on 19 January 2022, adding that more creators would be added in the coming weeks.

“Creators inspire people around the world with their talents and push culture forward every day.

“At Meta, we strongly believe in enabling creators to make a living through our platforms and have built a suite of tools to allow them to do that—helping them get support from their audience, partner with brands and earn money from advertising or bonuses directly from Instagram and Facebook.

“We’re excited to introduce our newest monetization feature: Instagram Subscriptions.”

“Starting today, we’re beginning to test subscriptions with a handful of creators who will be able to set a monthly price of their choice, unlock a ‘subscribe’ button on their profile and offer the following benefits to their subscribers.”

The creators determine the price of their subscription tiers, which range from $0.99 to $99.99 per month so that users will have access to subscriber-only content such as Lives and Stories. Users will also receive a purple badge next to their username to indicate their status to creators.

Instagram said it will not take a cut of creators’ subscription revenues until 2023 just like it did for Facebook.

“As part of our continued commitment to supporting creators, we shared that Meta would not collect any fees from creators on Facebook Subscriptions purchases until 2023 at the earliest, and this will also apply to Instagram Subscriptions.”

“One of the best ways” for influencers to generate income is by signing up for Instagram subscriptions, according to Instagram’s CEO Adam Mosseri.

Meta CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, who owns Instagram, wrote in a Facebook post that he’s “excited to keep building tools for creators to make a living doing creative work and to put these tools in more creators’ hands soon.”

Facebook also offers its own subscription service for creators. However, it wasn’t the only platform offering subscriptions; Twitter launched Super Follows recently, and there are other platforms like Patreon and OnlyFans that charge creators in exchange for exclusive content.
