Ikorodu residents displeased over list of commissioner-nominees, demand more slots

Following the release of the list of commissioner-nominees by the Lagos State Government last Friday, some residents of Ikorodu have protested the “one slot” given to the Ikorodu Division, alleging “marginalisation.”

The protesters, who converged on the Lagos Road area of Ikorodu in the early hours of Monday and Tuesday, said they were displeased by the appointment despite working hard to deliver the division for Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in the March 18 governorship election.

Speaking on Tuesday, one of the protesters, who simply gave his name as Taiwo, said, “We were shocked to see the commissioner nominees list and discovered that Ikorodu has only one slot after working hard to deliver Ikorodu for the governor in the election.”

The protesters carried placards with various inscriptions, such as, “Sanwo-Olu, wetin we do for Ikorodu?”; “Say NO to marginalisation”; “Five commissioners or nothing,” among others.

But speaking on Wednesday, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Gboyega Akosile, said no segment of the state was marginalised.

“I’ve seen the agitations of the people of Ikorodu and even Mushin, saying that they deserve more than one commissioner.

“I also understand that it is the right of every group to agitate. But one thing the governor is upholding is fairness, equity and justice for the greatest good of the people.

“The governor and his team, and other stakeholders, including the hierarchy of the party (the All Progressives Congress) looked at so many variables and so many factors before coming up with a list of proposed cabinet members.

“But one thing is very sure, nobody will be left out of governance.”

Akosile added that Sanwo-Olu concentrated a lot of the developmental work of his first administration in Ikorodu.
