Governor Sanwo-Olu rewards team Lagos athletes for Stellar performance at national youth games

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu rewards athletes from Team Lagos for their second-place finish at the 8th National Youth Games, announcing cash prizes for medallists and further support for sports development.

 

 

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has lauded Team Lagos athletes for their exceptional performance at the 8th National Youth Games held in Asaba.

The team finished in second place, showcasing the state’s growing prowess in youth sports.

At a reception hosted at the Banquet Hall, Lagos House, Ikeja, the governor, represented by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, presented cash rewards to the athletes, with gold medallists receiving N200,000, silver medallists N150,000, and bronze medallists N100,000.

Additionally, all participating athletes were given N50,000 each. Coaches were also honoured with a $100,000 reward for their efforts.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, in his message, expressed pride in the athletes, saying, “You are truly our pride, and we hold you in the highest regard. We are committed to supporting you every step of the way to reach your full potential.”

He also highlighted the alignment of his administration’s THEMES+ agenda with sports and education, which has supported the full participation of students from both public and private secondary schools across the state.

The Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, extended his gratitude to the Lagos State Sports Commission, sponsors, and parents for their contributions to the athletes’ success.

Lekan Fatodu, the Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, praised the athletes’ academic and sporting achievements, reinforcing the state’s commitment to supporting the athletes’ growth.

He stated, “We are changing the narrative around sports development. We will continue to watch the development and support them to greater heights.”

Nine-year-old golfer and silver medallist, Beauty Oyero, spoke on behalf of the athletes, expressing appreciation for the state government’s support and promising to bring more glory to Lagos in future competitions.

This celebration marks an important step in the state’s ongoing efforts to integrate sports into the broader education system and develop young talent for future success.
